What is Disc Stakka™ firmware and how do I update it?
Firmware is the software that is embedded in a hardware device: in this instance, your Disc Stakka CD & DVD Manager unit.
Updates for the Disc Stakka firmware are issued occasionally, and are available for download from the OpdiTracker web site. These updates can contain fixes, enhancements to existing functionality, and new functionality.
Before you download an update, you should check to see what version of the firmware is currently running on your Disc Stakka units. For each unit,
- From Windows Explorer, right-click the Disc Stakka unit, and then click Properties.
- Make sure the General tab is selected in the Disc Stakka Properties dialog box. The Firmware version is shown next to the unit's serial number.
- From the OpdiTracker web site, click the Download Software Updates quick link.
- On the Updates page, go to Disc Stakka Firmware Updates to see whether there is an update available for a firmware version newer than what is running on your Disc Stakkas.
- If there is a newer version available, follow the instructions on the web site to download the update, and then load it on each one of your Disc Stakka units.
We strongly recommend that you keep your firmware up to date, and ensure that you have the same version of firmware running on ALL of your Disc Stakka units.

Can I connect Disc Stakka to a USB 2.0 port?
Yes. USB 2.0 is backwards compatible with the USB 1.1 specification. Therefore, there should be no problems using the Disc Stakka on a 2.0 port, even if you mix 2.0 and 1.1 peripheral hardware.

Does Disc Stakka run with Windows 95?
No. The Disc Stakka is supported for use only with Windows XP, 2000, ME and 98SE.
Even though it is possible to update Windows 95 to allow for USB support, and while it may in fact function as specified, this is not supported for use with the Disc Stakka.
How do I connect the Disc Stakka if my computer does not have a free USB port?
You can purchase a powered USB hub from a vendor.
There are NO endorsed or recommended vendors for these products for use with your Disc Stakka.
Why did I get a message about HID drivers being installed when I connected my Disc Stakka to the USB port?
HID (Human Interface Device) drivers are necessary for the operating system to communicate with your device through the USB port. These drivers work in conjunction with your OpdiTracker software to operate your Disc Stakka.
If HID drivers are not installed on your computer when a unit is first plugged in, Windows automatically attempts to install these drivers. Please follow the prompts to install the drivers.
If you cannot successfully install the HID drivers, you will not be able to use your Disc Stakka. Contact your computer vendor for assistance.
I installed the OpdiTracker software and connected my first Disc Stakka unit. Why doesn't the OpdiTracker software see the unit?
Make sure the OpdiTracker software is running
Whenever OpdiTracker is running, its logo is displayed in your computer's taskbar.
If the logo is not displayed, use Windows Explorer to navigate to OpdiTracker, and then click 'Please start the OpdiTracker application'.
Make sure the Disc Stakka unit is properly connected
See the Disc Stakka set up guide or user guide for full instructions showing how to connect Disc Stakka units to your computer, to each other, and to powered hubs.
Make sure your USB port is working correctly
If you have another USB device (such as a mouse), plug it into the port to verify that it is working and the device is recognized.
Make sure that there is a USB controller in your computer's Device Manager list
In Windows 98SE and ME
- From the Windows Start button, click Settings, Control Panel
- Double-click the System icon, and then click Device Manager.
In Windows 2000 and XP
- From the Windows Start button, click Control Panel.
- If you're using Category view, open Performance and Maintenance.
- Double-click the System icon.
- Click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
If there is no controller in the list, check the BIOS settings for the system to make sure the USB controller is enabled. If it is disabled, enable it and then reboot your computer.
Check the status of the new unit through your computer's Device Manager
Open Device Manager as described above.
Each tower of Disc Stakkas will appear as a single HID device within Device Manager.
If you see any entries with yellow exclamation points, run the hardware troubleshooter. If not, choose the USB controller from the list to check what devices are seen.
I added a Disc Stakka unit to an existing tower. Why doesn't the OpdiTracker software see the new unit?
Make sure that the tower contains 5 or fewer Disc Stakka units
For safety and power reasons, the OpdiTracker software will not communicate with more than five units in one tower. Connect more than five units to a computer via a powered USB hub or another USB port on your computer.
Make sure the unit is properly seated
Remove the unit from the tower, and then place it back on again making sure the connectors on the bottom of the new unit align with the one below and are properly seated.
Make sure the USB cable is providing enough power for the tower
Try disconnecting and reconnecting the USB cable from the bottom unit on the tower. It is possible that there is not enough power through the USB ports to power up the stack.
Try connecting the unit directly to the computer to verify it is working. If so, connecting the unit as the start of a new tower (that is, to another USB port) may help (You may need to reboot your computer depending on your setup).
Failing that, connecting the tower through a powered USB hub should resolve the problem.
My Disc Stakka tower worked when it was connected directly to my computer. Why doesn't it work now it is connected via a powered hub?
Make sure you haven't exceeded the limits for USB connections
The limit for USB device connections is 127 devices, and the depth of a USB chain is 5 hubs. See www.usg.org for more information.
Make sure the USB port is working correctly
If you have another USB device (such as a mouse), plug it into the port to verify that it is working and the device is recognized. You can also try plugging the tower into another port in the hub.
Make sure the USB controller is in your computer's Device Manager list
In Windows 98SE and ME
- From the Windows Start button, click Settings, Control Panel.
If there is a controller, check to see that the USB hub is seen by the system, and then reboot your computer.
If there is no controller in the list, check the BIOS settings for the system to make sure that the USB controller is enabled, and then reboot your computer.

Can I connect a USB cable to more than one Disc Stakka in a tower?
NO. DO NOT connect USB cables to more than one unit in a tower. Connect a USB cable ONLY to the bottom unit in the tower.
The units receive their power and signalling through the Disc Stakka's ports on the bottom of each unit.
Can I connect my Disc Stakka system to more than one computer?
NO. DO NOT connect USB cables from more than one computer to a unit, tower, or powered hub within your Disc Stakka system.
Connecting USB cables from more than one computer to a unit, tower, or powered hub can cause SERIOUS ELECTRICAL DAMAGE to both the units and the computers.
